Vanuatu

Vanuatu is a small island nation situated in the South Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago comprised of 83 islands in a ‘Y” shaped chain stretched over 1,300 km. As in other Pacific Island States, the food and nutrition situation in Vanuatu has changed over the years. The last 20 years has seen a gradual decline in the consumption of local foods in both rural and urban areas. The majority of the population (76%) lives in rural areas and is engaged in rural subsistence agriculture. However, most of the agricultural activities are geared towards generating additional household income through sales in local markets as well as towards penetrating niche market for high value organically grown food products such as copra, beef, cocoa, kava and coffee contributing to 21% of the GDP.
